O Jazz no Paraná entre 1920 e 1940 - por Marilia Giller
ABSTRACT
This paper is a historical and
socio-cultural study on the Jazz in the State of Paraná, in southern Brazil,
between the decades of 1920 and 1940. The main objective is to show a
perspective of Jazz produced in this period in the culture of Paraná. Specific
data was raised concerning private and institutional collections which were
found in the period from 2002 up to 2012 in Curitiba. Furthermore, the social
setting of Parana, the social setting of Paraná, the Jazz as a mass phenomenon
represented by the presence of the Fox-trot
and the Jazz band formations were studied. Also, a comparative and structural
analysis of the work O Sabiá, the Fox-trot Shimmy of José da Cruz was
carried out along this work. This period of time coincides with the time of
modernization of Paraná and its capital, Curitiba. The migratory flow has set
its urban environment which turned out Curitiba to become the ideal place for
artists and musicians who integrated orchestras, chamber ensembles, regionais de Choro, and Jazz bands. To
understand such a relation, the concept of “Translation” hosted by Stuart
Hall’s concept of “Translation”, Nestor Canclini’s concept of
“Interculturalism”, rather than Acácio Piedade’s concept of “Musicality” have
been sought in order to find which intercultural processes occurred in artistic
environment of Paraná.
